NITPA
Meets with President Obasanjo
As part of a Nigerian Professional delegation, NITPA met in June
with President Olusegun Obasanjo in Washington DC to discuss roles
the federal government of Nigeria can play towards mobilizing and
utilizing the abundant human resources in the diaspora Nigerian
community.
In a
brief presentation given to the President, NITPA reiterated its professional
and non-partisan makeup, and outlined its goals to seek effective
means of advancing Nigeria's I.T. sector within the areas of:
Telecommunications
and Networks
IT
Application
IT
Development
Consulting
Education
& Research
In
his response, the President was pleased to know that Nigerians
are emerging on their own professional rights. He announced that
the Nigerian government is planning to initiate a "Professional
Voluntary Service" for Nigerians in diaspora - a scheme that
will cover ICT, Health Services, Agriculture, Education and a
few other areas of interest to the nation. When fully operational,
the program would allow Nigerians who wish, to be retained for
a period of a few weeks (to a few months) to work on specific
projects for the government.
NITPA
summarized its areas of interests and initiatives in IT Curriculum
audit, Open University, Indigenization legislation, Telecommunication,
and IT exchange programs. The sourcing of projects through sweat-equity
and eventual funding from Nigerian and international agencies
was also emphasized.
