NITPA Meets with President Obasanjo

As part of a Nigerian Professional delegation, NITPA met in June with President Olusegun Obasanjo in Washington DC to discuss roles the federal government of Nigeria can play towards mobilizing and utilizing the abundant human resources in the diaspora Nigerian community.

In a brief presentation given to the President, NITPA reiterated its professional and non-partisan makeup, and outlined its goals to seek effective means of advancing Nigeria's I.T. sector within the areas of:

  • Telecommunications and Networks

  • IT Application

  • IT Development

  • Consulting

  • Education & Research

In his response, the President was pleased to know that Nigerians are emerging on their own professional rights. He announced that the Nigerian government is planning to initiate a "Professional Voluntary Service" for Nigerians in diaspora - a scheme that will cover ICT, Health Services, Agriculture, Education and a few other areas of interest to the nation. When fully operational, the program would allow Nigerians who wish, to be retained for a period of a few weeks (to a few months) to work on specific projects for the government.

NITPA summarized its areas of interests and initiatives in IT Curriculum audit, Open University, Indigenization legislation, Telecommunication, and IT exchange programs. The sourcing of projects through sweat-equity and eventual funding from Nigerian and international agencies was also emphasized.
